Summary

Weigh In Motion (WiM) refers to a technology used to record axle loads as vehicles travel over sensors at normal traffic speed. Data has been collected at four locations on the NZ state highway network since before year 2000.

Before 2010 the data was not published. It was only used to (1) support pavement modelling and design by roading engineers, and (2) as a limited input into the annual State Highway traffic data booklet.

In 2010 the decision to publish WiM data as an annual report, to provide an insight into the data now available, particularly the characteristics of the New Zealand heavy vehicle fleet.

The first report was released in 2010.
