Every year, the Ministry of Transport produces a series of Crash Fact Sheets. These fact sheets outline useful statistical information on road safety issues, drawn from yearly motor vehicle crash data. Topics include alcohol, speed, safety belts and cyclists.

Crash reduction studies

The programme, which was set up in 1985, identified sites where there were similar crash patterns and recommended low cost engineering treatments aimed at reducing those crashes.

Cycle counting in New Zealand

This project consists of two components: a literature review of traffic-counting technology able to detect and monitor cycle traffic on a continuous basis and an internet-based survey of road controlling authorities (RCAs) and regional councils about their experience and interest in counting cycle traffic, either manually or automatically.

These national surveys are designed to provide a consistent measure of cycle helmet use over time, by surveying the same sites each year. We can use this data to consider the regional wearing rates.
