About the NZ Transport Agency

Our purpose

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is a Crown entity established on 1 August 2008, under the amended Land Transport Management Act 2003, bringing together the functions of Land Transport New Zealand and Transit New Zealand to provide an integrated approach to transport planning, funding and delivery.

The NZ Transport Agency contributes to an integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable land transport system, in support of the updated New Zealand Transport Strategy.

We work in partnership with regional and local authorities, the transport industry and communities to achieve this.

The NZ Transport Agency is focused on delivering four key outcomes:

  • integration
  • safety
  • sustainability
  • value for money.

We are responsible for Crown revenue of $2.8 billion and allocation of $2.0 billion, and an operating budget of approximately $240 million.

We provide a vital link between government policy making and the operation of the transport sector.

Our regions

The NZ Transport Agency is divided into six regions. A more regionally-focused funding environment means that the NZTA will approach developing national transport infrastructure through regional decision making. We look forward to working alongside our partners to achieve this, as together we implement government policy through the New Zealand Transport Strategy (NZTS) and the Government Policy Statement on land transport funding.

The NZTA regions are: Auckland and Northland; Waikato and Bay of Plenty; Taranaki, Manawatu-Wanganui, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne; Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough and Tasman; Canterbury and West Coast; and Otago and Southland.

The NZTA regional boundaries match regional district council boundaries.
